The Cincinnati Reds salvaged the three-game series against the defending world champion Dodgers and avoided being swept yet again this season, winning 5-2 on Wednesday night. Spencer Steer’s two-run triple in the eighth inning broke open a 2-2 game and Cincinnati is now 57-52 on the season. Scott Barlow got the win on the mound. The Reds are back in action tonight at Great American Ballpark to open up a three-game series with the Atlanta Braves. Coverage on WRBI begins at 6:40 with first pitch scheduled for 7:10.
Today is the MLB Trade Deadline and the Reds made two moves yesterday in hopes of bolstering their playoff chances. Cincinnati struck a deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday afternoon, acquiring former Gold Glove winning third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes in exchange for relief pitcher Taylor Rogers and minor leaguer Sammy Stafura. Cincinnati followed it up with grabbing right-handed pitcher Zack Littell from the Tampa Bay Rays and trading away minor league arms Adam Serwinowski and Brian Van Belle. Littell was 8-8 on the mound for the Rays this season with a 3.58 earned run average.
WNBA action on Wednesday night saw the Indiana Fever win their third game in a row, defeating the Phoenix Mercury 107-101. Aari McDonald led the Fever with 27 points on 7-of-11 shooting and Aliyah Boston added 22 points. Five players for Indiana scored in double figures. The Fever are now 15-12 on the season and visit the Dallas Wings on Friday night.
NFL Preseason Football begins tonight with the annual Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio. The Los Angeles Chargers will square off with the Detroit Lions in the preseason opener. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. The full preseason slate begins next Thursday, August 7.
Many fans have been keeping a close eye on the quarterback competition between Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones at Colts training camp. So far, there is no clear frontrunner for the position. Training has only been going on for a week now. Richardson says he feels he is in a better spot than he was at this point last year. Jones says he is trying not to think about the ins and outs of the decision-making process on who will be the starter.
The Indiana football Hoosiers held their first practice of the Fall season on Wednesday as they get prepared to begin their second season under head coach Curt Cignetti. Coach Cig said it’s way too early to see what they truly have in the tank for the upcoming campaign. He said the goal is to simply improve upon last year. They will face Old Dominion to begin the regular season in just over a month.
The Indianapolis Indians came up short after falling to the Cubs 5-2 in Des Moines. Bubba Chandler was charged with the loss after allowing five runs on five hits and four walks. Indianapolis had its winning streak snapped after three games and hopes to bounce back when it continues its six-game series against Iowa tonight.
