World Cup winner Ricky Ponting believes it is ‘only matter of time’ before New Zealand win big honours such as the Champions Trophy or the World Cup.
“They (NZ) just came up against a really good team in the final, and they weren’t far away. India won in the 49th or 50th over. The Kiwis haven’t done a lot wrong,” Ponting said.
A routine 6-1, 6-1 win for Carlos Alcaraz over Grigor Dimitrov has seen him progress to the next round at the Indian Wells Open 2025. The Spaniard will meet Francisco Cerundolo in the quarter-finals.
Kolkata Knight Riders’ CEO Venky Mysore has given his opinion as to why Rahane was picked as KKR skipper for IPL 2025 season ahead of Venkatesh Iyer.
“IPL is quite an intense tournament. We think very well of Venkatesh Iyer, but at the same time, it [captaincy] is taxing on a youngster. We have seen lots of people having lots of challenges with it [handling captaincy] as they go forward,” Mysore said while speaking to ESPNCricinfo.
“It takes a very steady hand, takes a lot of maturity and experience, which we felt Ajinkya brings with him,” Mysore added.
The 2025 London Marathon is poised to make history as the largest-ever marathon field, with more than 56,000 runners expected to cross the finish line on Sunday, 27 April.
If achieved, this would surpass the current record of 55,646 finishers set by the New York Marathon in November.
Since its inaugural race in 1981, the London Marathon has seen over 1.3 million runners complete the iconic 26.2-mile course.
Formula 1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali has secured his future at the helm of the sport, signing a new contract that runs until the end of 2029.
The Italian, who took charge in 2021 after stints as Ferrari team principal and Lamborghini chief executive, will continue to shape F1’s direction for the next five years. The announcement comes just days before the season-opening Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, setting the stage for another chapter under his leadership.
Britain’s Sonay Kartal saw her memorable Indian Wells campaign halted by world number one Aryna Sabalenka.
The 23-year-old battled hard but fell to a 6-1, 6-2 defeat, with Sabalenka wrapping up the match in just over an hour to book her place in the quarter-finals.
While the scoreline didn’t reflect Kartal’s effort, it highlighted the power and precision of the three-time Grand Slam champion’s ball-striking.
Marcus Smith returns to England’s starting XV at full-back for their Six Nations finale against Wales at the Principality Stadium.
Smith is restored to the number 15 shirt after missing out on a starting role in England’s dominant win over Italy. Meanwhile, Tommy Freeman, who has earned all 19 of his Test caps as a winger, moves into the midfield to replace the injured Ollie Lawrence for Saturday’s showdown in Cardiff.
Crystal Palace have opened discussions with manager Oliver Glasner over a contract extension.
Negotiations are still in the early stages, with the Austrian’s current deal set to run until the end of next season.
Glasner recently marked his first year in charge, guiding Palace to 11th in the Premier League and the FA Cup quarter-finals, where they will face Fulham on 29 March. The club also reached the last eight of the Carabao Cup this season.
Mercedes Formula 1 boss Toto Wolff has ruled out any plans to pursue Max Verstappen for 2026, insisting the Dutchman is “not on any radar.”
With George Russell’s contract expiring at the end of the season, Wolff previously held discussions with Verstappen but ultimately chose 18-year-old Italian rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli as Lewis Hamilton’s replacement following the seven-time champion’s switch to Ferrari.
Speaking ahead of this weekend’s season-opening Australian Grand Prix, Wolff made his stance clear: “We need to focus on our own driver line-up. I don’t flirt outside if I’m in a good relationship.”
India secured two gold, two silver, and one bronze medal across two sporting disciplines, extending their medal tally to nine on the second day of the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Turin, Italy.
Snowboarding, which had already brought India four medals on the opening day, added two more accolades to the tally on Wednesday:
Bharti (division F25) – Gold in the Novice Slalom Final (their second gold of the tournament).
Harshita Thakur (division F26) – Bronze in the Novice Slalom Final (after winning silver on the first day).
Alpine Skiing also saw India shine with three more medals:
Nirmala Devi (division F06) – Gold in the Intermediate Giant Slalom Final.
Radha Devi (division F01) – Silver in the Intermediate Giant Slalom Final.
Abhishek Kumar (division M02) – Silver in the Novice Giant Slalom Final.
India are competing in six of the eight sporting disciplines at the tournament: Snowboarding, Snowshoeing, Alpine Skiing, Speed Skating, Floorball, and Cross Country Skiing.
India continue to dominate the World Para Athletics Grand Prix 2025 in New Delhi, topping the medal tally at the end of Day 2 with an impressive 95 medals, 33 gold, 29 silver, and 33 bronze.
Trailing far behind, the Neutral Para Athletes contingent sit in second place with 26 medals, comprising 13 gold, 9 silver, and 4 bronze. Meanwhile, Uzbekistan complete the top three with a balanced tally of 4 gold, 4 silver, and 4 bronze medals.
Big day ahead for India on Day 3! 🇮🇳🏸

Swashbuckling cricketer AB De Villiers has commented on Rohit Sharma’s retirement from ODI cricket, stating that the Indian captain has no reason to call it quits from the sport.
“Compared to other captains, look at Rohit’s win percentage — it’s almost 74 per cent, which is substantially more than any other captain of the past,” de Villiers said in his YouTube channel.
“If he keeps going, he will go down as one of the best ODI captains of all time. Rohit has also said he is not retiring and has requested that rumours be stopped spreading.”
World heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk has been directed by the WBO to enter negotiations with Joseph Parker for a mandatory title defence.
Parker, 33, secured his interim WBO title in February with a dominant second-round knockout victory over Martin Bakole. Meanwhile, Usyk, 38, holds the WBC, WBA (Super), and WBO heavyweight titles after defeating Tyson Fury for the second time in December.
The two fighters have 30 days to reach an agreement, or the WBO will initiate purse bid proceedings.
Former Australia batter David Warner will make his debut in The Hundred after being signed by London Spirit.
The 38-year-old was initially set to play for Southern Brave in the tournament’s inaugural edition in 2020 before it was canceled due to Covid-19 but had not been picked up since.
Meanwhile, former England seamer James Anderson went unsold, along with 16-year-old Rocky Flintoff, son of legendary all-rounder Andrew Flintoff. Anderson, 42, also went unsold in this year’s Indian Premier League auction but remains hopeful of playing all formats for Lancashire this summer.
The UEFA Champions League quarter-final bracket is set after a dramatic Round of 16, with Liverpool and Atletico Madrid bowing out. Aston Villa face Paris Saint-Germain, while Arsenal take on Real Madrid as the remaining teams gear up for a fierce battle for a semi-final spot.

Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy believes Tiger Woods is unlikely to return to competitive golf this year following his latest injury setback.
On Tuesday, the 49-year-old Woods underwent surgery for a ruptured Achilles tendon, further complicating his already limited playing schedule. Since suffering severe leg injuries in a 2021 car crash, the 15-time major champion has significantly reduced his appearances and has not competed in a PGA Tour event since The Open in July.
“It’s tough,” said McIlroy, who played alongside Woods in January in the Tomorrow’s Golf League (TGL), the technology-driven competition the two co-founded.
Vanessa Low’s story isn’t just about destinations. They are dots on the map, each shaping her journey. Some of those dots shine brighter than the rest, three of them gleaming like Paralympic gold medals. She carries that journey on her skin, with coordinates inked on her right forearm, each a landmark in her story.
