Steve Smith, one of Australia’s top Test cricketers, is on the verge of creating history at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground in London. The 36-year-old will be playing in the upcoming ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final against South Africa, starting June 11, 2025. This could potentially be Smith’s last Test match at Lord’s, and he has a golden chance to break a record that’s nearly 99 years old.
Smith needs just 51 more runs to become the highest run-scorer at Lord’s by a visiting player, meaning anyone who isn’t from England.  The record is currently held by another Australian, Warren Bardsley, who scored 575 runs in seven innings. His last Test at Lord’s saw him score an unbeaten 193. 
To take the top spot, Smith will have to go past a list of cricketing greats. Right behind Bardsley is West Indies legend Gary Sobers with 571 runs from nine innings, followed by the iconic Don Bradman, who scored 551 runs in eight innings at the ground.
Steve Smith has already had great success at Lord’s. Across nine innings in five Test matches, he has scored 525 runs at an average of 58.33, including two centuries and two fifties. His performances at this venue have been consistently impressive.
He scored a double century in 2015, helping Australia win that match by a massive 405 runs. He returned to Lord’s in the 2023 Ashes series, scoring 110 in the first innings and contributing to another Aussie win.
Smith has spoken fondly of Lord’s, calling it his favourite cricket ground outside his home city of Sydney. His overall Test performance in England is also remarkable; he averages 55 in the country. Notably, in the 2023 WTC Final against India at The Oval, he scored 121, proving he thrives in high-pressure matches in English conditions. 
Although there was a brief period where centuries were hard to come by, he returned to form recently with two tons against India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and another two centuries against Sri Lanka.
In his career so far, Smith has played 116 Test matches and scored 10,271 runs at an average of 56.74. He has hit 36 centuries and 41 fifties, making him the fourth-highest run-scorer for Australia in Test cricket.
