    The Australian High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea and Special Envoy to the Pacific and Regional Affairs, His Excellency Mr Ewen McDonald, hosted an afternoon tea reception this week to celebrate the inaugural PacificAus Sports Cricket Invitational and to officially welcome the national women’s teams from Samoa, Vanuatu, and the Australian Indigenous team to Papua New Guinea.
    This sort of elite grouping is a new fixture. It’s a really good testament to the bonds between the Pacific countries and to see you all here in your uniforms.
    “Thank you all for being here.
    I wish you well in the invitational tournament. I hope all of you really enjoy it and build good friendships between the teams,” he said.
    In a great display of sport as a unifying force, the reception was a joyous occasion as the teams bonded through cultural singing in true Pacific spirit, extending a warm welcome to the Australian Indigenous team.
    The inaugural PacificAus Sports Cricket Invitational hosted by Cricket PNG and the PNG women’s team, the Lewas, at Amini Park in Port Moresby runs until 21st June 2025, showcasing the incredible talent and passion of women’s cricket across the Pacific.
    The Lewas get to show their skills locally following their recent achievement of earning Women’s One Day International (ODI) status.
    This milestone will enable the Lewas to compete for the 2025-2029 cycle on the global stage.
    As Papua New Guinea prepares to celebrate the significant milestone of its 50th anniversary of independence this year, the tournament this week, is a fitting tribute to the shared journey and the collective future of Papua New Guinea with the Blue Pacific and Australia.
    The inclusion of the Australian Indigenous Women’s team in this invitational demonstrates the rich and enduring bond that Australia shares across the Blue Pacific, it celebrates our shared values: culture, family, spirituality and sport. Forming our collective identity, the T20 tournament, supported through the Australian Government’s PacificAus Sports program and in partnership with Cricket Australia, has seen women’s national teams face off in what has been a thrilling celebration of women’s cricket in the Pacific.
