Sports Editor Matt Daniels with a look at what’s happening around the area:
Ball State athletics
Kenli Nettles, a 2020 Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond graduate, will represent Ball State in the NCAA outdoor track and field Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., later this week.
➜ 1. Keep an eye out for 2020 Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond graduate Kenli Nettles this week at the NCAA outdoor track and field Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
➜ 2. Nettles, a Class 1A state champion in both the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles in 2019 during her junior season at ALAH, will compete for Ball State in the heptathlon starting on Friday and continuing Saturday out in Oregon. She won the Mid-American Conference heptathlon title in mid-May to secure her spot in Oregon.
➜ 3. Ball State is the third college stop for Nettles after she initially signed with Iowa coming out of high school and then transferred to Illinois before landing a spot with the Cardinals.
Bismarck-Henning graduate Dylan Dodd is pitching well out of the bullpen for the Atlanta Braves.
runs Dylan Dodd has allowed in four relief appearances the past two weeks with the Atlanta Braves. The 27-year-old left-handed reliever and Bismarck-Henning graduate threw a scoreless inning of relief and retired all three batters he faced on Tuesday night against the Brewers in Milwaukee. Dodd and the Braves are off Thursday before hosting the Rockies on Friday night at Truist Park in Atlanta.
Abria Smith will compete in the shot put for the Illinois women’s track and field program on Thursday night in the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore.
Three events I’m paying attention to
➜ 1. NCAA outdoor track and field Championships. Mia Morello in the pole vault, Sophia Beckmon and Tacoria Humphrey in the long jump, Abria Smith in the shot put and the 400-meter relay quartet of Beckmon, Azariyah Bryant, Asia Thomas and Llyric Driscoll will represent the Illini women’s program on Thursday night at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
➜ 2. Louisville vs. Oregon State baseball. Champaign Central graduate Jake Munroe and Louisville (40-22) start their College World Series at 6 p.m. Friday against the Beavers (47-14-1) in Omaha, Neb.
➜ 3. Thrillville Thrillbillies at Danville Dans. The Dans are back at Danville Stadium on Friday for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch in a Prospect League game.
Champaign Central girls’ basketball player Rylee Boyer-Killion.
Three questions with Champaign Central girls’ basketball player Rylee Boyer-Killion, who will be a senior during the 2025-26 season:
➜ 1. Three athletes I’d like to have dinner with are … Paige Bueckers, Brynn Shoup-Hill and Kris Bryant.
➜ 2. The TV I most like to binge-watch is … “Gilmore Girls.”
➜ 3. My biggest pet peeve is … being late.
