The News-Press selects athletes that stood out the week before based on a combination of coach reports and school nominations sent to sports@news-press.com and our coverage. Those athletes are put in a poll each Monday on news-press.com and you, our readers, vote on who you think did it best. The winners of The News-Press Athlete of the Week poll sponsored by Elevate Home Services receive a T-shirt from BSN Sports and a tote bag from the USA Today High School Sports Awards. To get to know our winners better, The News-Press will have a question-and-answer session with each athlete.
The News-Press Athlete of the Week sponsored by Elevate Home Services winner for March 24-29 with 46% of the votes was Mariner flag football player Mia Standard. The senior Standard threw three touchdown passes in a 26-0 win against Cape Coral.
Question: You are the flag football team’s starting quarterback and the softball team’s catcher. How do you juggle playing two varsity team sports at the same time?
Standard: I just talk to the coaches and just deal with the schedule, and then I just go out and play.
You’ve played softball for a long time. What made you decide to try football?
Standard: I always grew up with the sport of football. Like, I’ve thrown, I’d go outside and throw the ball with my cousins, and I always loved playing football.
How’s the adjustment been from throwing the ball around to playing for real?
Standard: It’s a lot. It’s just like learning the rules. It’s like different than real football, but it was a lot, but I’m used to it now.
What advice would you give another athlete who wanted to platy two sports in the same season like you are?
Standard: I would say just stay in the right mental capacity and just keep pushing and work hard.
The football and softball teams have winning records right now. What are your goals for both teams for the rest of the year?
Standard: To win. I want to win and just work hard
