MINNESOTA TWINS
— The Minnesota Twins have finalized a new ownership structure, adding several limited partners while keeping control with the Pohlad family. Major League Baseball has approved Minnesota Wild owner Craig Leipold, Glick Family Investments, and investor George G. Hicks as new partners in the franchise. There’s also a leadership change at the top. Tom Pohlad will take over as the Twins’ executive chair, replacing his brother Joe Pohlad, and is expected to become the team’s control person pending MLB approval. The Twins were originally purchased by the Pohlad family in 1984. The addition of minority investors is intended to help reduce debt and stabilize the team financially, while the family retains a controlling interest.
NFL
— The Miami Dolphins are benching quarterback Tua Tagovailoa for rookie seventh-round pick Quinn Ewers. Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel says his decision to start Ewers on Sunday against the Bengals came down to who he felt gave the Dolphins the best chance to win. The decision came after Tagovailoa struggled in a 28-15 loss to Pittsburgh on Monday night that eliminated Miami from playoff contention. Tagovailoa leads the NFL with 15 interceptions and hasn’t played up to his contract after signing a four-year, $212 million extension in July 2024.
— Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has started rehab after surgery to repair two torn knee ligaments. The team is optimistic he could return early next season. The surgery was performed Monday night in Dallas, a day after Mahomes was injured in a game against the Chargers. Recovery typically takes about nine months. The Chiefs are out of playoff contention after losing to the Chargers. Backup QB Gardner Minshew will start for the final three games.
— The Chicago Bears say they’re mulling a move to Northwest Indiana with their efforts to secure public funding they say they need to build an enclosed stadium in Illinois stalled. Team president Kevin Warren insisted in an open letter to fans that the team still prefers to build a new home on a tract of land it owns in suburban Arlington Heights, Illinois. He also said the Bears are not using the threat to cross state lines as leverage. Warren did not say where in Northwest Indiana the Bears would look to move. The Bears’ focus for a new home has fluctuated between a tract of land they own in Arlington Heights to the Chicago lakefront, and then back to the suburbs.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— Michigan says it will “leave no stone unturned” as its investigation into the football program and athletic department continues. Interim president Domenico Grasso says additional misconduct could be uncovered and more firings are possible. The probe follows the firing of head coach Sherrone Moore earlier this month for an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. Moore now faces multiple criminal charges. An outside law firm is conducting a full review, and Grasso says any action will be based on credible findings. Michigan will be coached by interim head man Biff Poggi in the Citrus Bowl against Texas.
SOCCER
— The winner of the 2026 World Cup will receive $50 million from a $655 million prize pool, FIFA said in announcing record financial rewards for teams in a tournament with ticket prices that have sparked outcries. The champion’s figure is up from $42 million won by Argentina in 2022 and $38 million giving to France in 2018. The total prize fund for the World Cup, up 48% from the $440 million for 2022 and nearly six times the $110 million in prize money for the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
MLB
— A lawyer for the family of late pitcher Tyler Skaggs argues that the Los Angeles Angels’ failure to investigate reports of drug use and dealing by the team’s communications director led to the overdose death of the 27-year-old player. An Angels’ attorney, however, says it was Skaggs who was pushing drug addicted employee Eric Kay to provide him with pills. The long-running civil trial in Southern California is over whether the team should be held responsible for Skaggs’ death.
NBA
— Jaren Jackson Jr. had 28 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Memphis Grizzlies over the Minnesota Timberwolves 116-110. Julius Randle scored 21 points for the Timberwolves. Donte DiVincenzo had 19 points and 11 rebounds and Rudy Gobert added 16 points and 16 boards, but Minnesota lost for just the second time in their past nine games. Both teams played without their top scorer. Minnesota’s Anthony Edwards missed his third straight game with a right foot injury, and Ja Morant was out for the Grizzlies with a left ankle sprain sustained on Monday. Minnesota hosts Oklahoma City on Friday at 8:30 pm on Amazon Prime Video.
— Josh Giddey scored 23 points as part of his sixth triple-double this season, while Coby White added 25 as the Chicago Bulls beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 127-111.
