3-2-1 blastoff! UCF football plays perhaps its spaciest Space Game ever tonight against Houston, looking to extend its record in its nods to the school’s NASA ties to 9-0.
The Knights could use some magic of the Citronauts (that’s what they’ll be called tonight) after taking a 30-3 loss last week at Baylor to fall to 4-4 (1-4 in Big 12). Running back Myles Montgomery, sixth in the conference with 71.5 rushing yards per game, has gone three games without a 100-yard day. Slumps haven’t stopped the Space Game mojo before: UCF was on a five-game skid last year before unleashing a 56-12 beatdown on Arizona.
At 7-2 (4-2), Houston is hoping to get into the Big 12 championship game and snag a College Football Playoff bid. Those plans took a shot last week when the Cougars were stunned at home by West Virginia 45-35.

UCF 24, Houston 16: “Generating takeaways tops UCF defensive coordinator Alex Grinch‘s checklist every week, but it becomes even more imperative against Houston. The Cougars turned the ball over four times against West Virginia, and it resulted in 17 points for the conference’s bottom-ranked offense. Seven of Houston’s eight turnovers this fall occurred in their two losses.”
Houston 27, UCF 21: “How long can the Space Game win streak continue? Into infinity? UCF’s offense will need to be just short of infinity times better to get a win Friday. Last week against Baylor, it managed three points. On Oct. 11 against Cincinnati, it mustered 11. The Knights’ lone win since mid-September — and lone offensive outburst of more than 20 points since then — came Oct. 18 against West Virginia 45-13.”
Houston 46, UCF 17: “This whole Space Game streak of UCF’s truly is out of this world. Include the wild margin-of-victory average, and you really do need a rocket scientist to decipher the statistical oddities in play here. Both teams are coming off a disappointing loss. But UCF’s 30-3 pratfall at Baylor provides the type of recency bias you can’t ignore.”
