NEWS RELEASE
BARRIE ARTS & SPORTS ACADEMY
*************************
The growing popularity of cricket in Barrie and surrounding areas has hit another major milestone this week, as Barrie Arts & Sports Academy (BASA) announced that its free eight-week Youth Cricket Camp in Orillia has officially reached full capacity — just days after opening registration.
The camp, a partnership between BASA and Mariposa Cricket Club, begins Saturday, May 3 at West Orillia Sports Complex and runs every Saturday morning until June 21. Open to children aged six to 12, the program offers structured cricket training, coaching in teamwork and discipline, and a safe space for physical activity — all at no cost to participating families.
The initiative builds on the explosive growth cricket experienced in the region last year. In 2024, BASA hosted several introductory cricket clinics across Barrie and Orillia, alongside organizing the inaugural Super League Barrie (SLB) — a competitive league featuring eight local teams that brought together players, fans, and families from across the community.
“Cricket has become one of the fastest-growing sports in our area,” said Nithin Liviero, president of BASA. “Last year’s overwhelming response proved that this community is ready. But behind the scenes, it’s a constant uphill climb to fund these programs. Equipment, coaching, field access — it all adds up. Still, we chose to move forward because we didn’t want financial hardship to stand in the way of a child’s opportunity to play.”
While the camp’s quick registration numbers are being celebrated, the BASA team is also sounding the alarm on funding challenges that could jeopardize future programming.
“We’re thrilled but not surprised by how quickly the community responded,” added Basil Mathew, vice-president of BASA. “This shows how strong the demand is for accessible, high-quality youth programming. Even with the economic challenges many families are facing, we knew we had to offer this for free — because no child should miss out on the chance to play and grow.”
The success of this initiative is owed in large part to Ahad from Mariposa Cricket Club, whose ongoing commitment to grassroots cricket has been instrumental. From coaching to field co-ordination, Ahad has been a central figure in ensuring the program’s smooth execution.
Denny Jose, secretary of BASA, added that the camp isn’t just about sports.
“We’re not just running a camp — we’re investing in the future of our youth. Sports teach discipline, respect, and resilience. It’s our duty to create these spaces, especially now when kids need community and encouragement more than ever.”
Reegan Francis, treasurer of BASA, echoed the urgency for community support.
“We’re asking our local businesses and community leaders to rally behind us. Whether it’s sponsoring a jersey or donating equipment, every contribution helps. We want to continue offering these programs — but we can’t do it alone.”
With new summer programs already being planned for Barrie, the academy remains committed to making both sports and arts accessible to all. Organizers say upcoming announcements will include more youth development events and creative initiatives aimed at building stronger, more inclusive communities.
