Ben Shelton said he couldn't pinpoint when his left shoulder was injured. He stated he felt pain at the start of the fourth set. For someone who came into this tournament on a high after winning his first ATP Masters 1000 title, it's a tough result to swallow having to retire. But the American remains optimistic and grateful for the summer he had.
💭 “I was just trying to adjust and figure out whatever I can to keep competing. Even though I was in pain, I was just kind of in that competitive mindset of trying to find a way and push through it.
“A small setback like this, yeah, it hurts. I was playing really well, I was in form, a lot of confidence. Just so many things to be happy with the way that I was playing, moving on the court, competing.
“You won't hear me over here pouting about how bad things are with the summer that I've had, the things that I've been able to do in this sport in a short amount of time and the people I got around me.”

Frances Tiafoe said after his match that he hasn't been this low after a match in quite some time. He lost in straight sets to qualifier Jan-Lennard Struff.
💭: ”I just think it was a court thing. I think actually Louis played much better for me. It was very, very fast today. Last time I played, I didn't have many rallies. So it was kind of hard to kind of see how fast the court was moving.
“But today he was returning so big into me first couple of shots. It was very, very tough. I was late on everything. I thought I still had some looks to be aggressive and take charge a little bit, and I just didn't.
“It's going to be hard to swallow how I played today and being out of the US Open, for sure, this early.”

Novak Djokovic entered this year’s U.S. Open at a fascinating crossroads. At 38, he hadn't played since Wimbledon, a tournament where he reached the semifinal, before losing against Jannik Sinner.
But the 24-time slam champion still isn’t the dominant force in men’s tennis he once was. Djokovic hasn’t physically proven this year that he can last a full fortnight against younger competition.
Give Djokovic a hard court, best-of-five set format with a slam on the line and he’s still a threat in the main draw. The Serbian is a four-time U.S. Open champion, last winning in Flushing Meadows in 2023. He has a career 90-14 record at the U.S. Open.
Does Djokovic have one last magical run left in him? His run at the title continues today…
    Navarro *3-1 Krejčíková
The break barrage continues in this opening set. Emma Navarro breaks Barbora Krejčíková's serve for the second time in this set.
Two straight forehand errors from the two-time slam champion give the American the game. She is three games away from taking the opening set.

    It's on serve at Grandstand.
    Navarro *2-0 Krejčíková
Emma Navarro continues her strong start, going up a break on Barbora Krejčíková. On her third break point chance, the Czech player double faults, giving the American the break.
Shaky service game for Krejčíková, who only hit two first serves.
    Navarro 1-0* Krejčíková
Nice start for Emma Navarro, who opens with a hold. She wins all of her first serve points.
A nice crowd on Grandstand in support for the American.
