The ‘city of destiny’ is decked up for the much awaited ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, scheduled to begin from Thursday.
With the World Cup returning to Andhra Pradesh after 28 years, officials from the Andhra Cricket Association (ACA) and the Visakhapatnam District Cricket Association (VDCA) have made elaborate arrangements for the grand event.
The Dr. YSR ACA-VDCA International Cricket Stadium at PM Palem is ready to welcome players from India and South Africa. Final touches were being given by the groundsmen on Wednesday, while the entire stadium premises was brought under complete security. Dog squads and rope parties were actively conducting security checks, as ACA officials oversaw the final preparations at the venue.
Commissioner of Police, Shankabratha Bagchi, along with senior officers, inspected the security arrangements. Department heads also held briefing sessions for police personnel to ensure the smooth conduct of the matches. The traffic wing has designated parking areas for spectators, and police have already announced diversions for heavy vehicles along the NH-16 stretch between Anandapuram and Anakapalli.
Both teams have arrived in the city. Team India held their practice session on October 7, while the South Africa team trained on Wednesday. It has been nearly a decade since the Indian Women’s team played a match in Visakhapatnam. However, they held a week-long training camp at the same venue last month.
Cricket fans from across the State, especially from the Uttarandhra region, are eagerly awaiting the matches. The recently held World Cup trophy tour has built excitement among the citizens. The ACA expects a large turnout of women spectators. Ticket prices have been fixed at ₹150 for the marquee India vs. Australia match on October 12, and ₹100 for the remaining games.
Visakhapatnam will host five matches of the tournament, which include two matches of Team India. India will play South Africa on October 9, followed by another match against Australia on October 12. The remaining three matches are South Africa vs Bangladesh on October 13, Australia vs Bangladesh on October 16 and England vs New Zealand on October 26. Apart from the match between England and New Zeland, the remaining matches are day and night.
Visakhapatnam has never hosted a Women’s World Cup match before, however, it did host the Men’s ICC World Cup match between Australia and Kenya in 1996. Australia defeated Kenya by 97 runs. Meanwhile, the last Women’s World Cup match was hosted in united Andhra Pradesh in 1997 at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in Vijayawada, between England and Pakistan, in which England defeated Pakistan by 230 runs.
