Lifeline of Cricket
Former Pakistan players habitually insult current cricketers or the game’s legends. The trend has been going on for years, and there is hardly a day when a player doesn’t make shocking allegations. Umar Akmal is the latest player to come out all guns blazing against one of the game’s greats. He accused Waqar Younis of ruining his career during the latter’s coaching tenure with the national team.
“Wqaqr Younis was always after me. If I used to hit a four or a six in a practice session, he scolded me for treating Test cricket like a T20 format. When I rotated the strike during a match, I was told to stop playing ODI cricket in Test cricket. Now look at how Test cricket is being played. The matches are lasting for three or four days,” he said.
There was a time when three Akmal brothers, Umar, Kamran, and Adnan, were playing for Pakistan. “I heard Waqar saying, “Will all these three play all the cricket? What kind of statement is that from a head coach?”
Umar further mentioned that Waqar was more interested in his shoes and sunglasses. “He would ask about my shoes and sunglasses. Instead of focussing on my cricket, he was more interested in such things.”
He thanked the senior players for supporting him when Waqar was the coach. “Senior players told me to ignore Waqar’s statements. They urged me to play my natural game.”
Akmal represented Pakistan in 16 Tests, 121 ODIs, and 84 T20Is.
