Barely a week out from the 2025/26 Ashes series Steve Smith isn’t just scoring runs.
One day after top-scoring for NSW in the first innings of its Sheffield Shield match against Victoria, the 35-year-old has taken one of the reflex catches of the year at the SCG.
Fielding at first slip for his Aussie teammate Nathan Lyon, Smith was completely unsighted by NSW wicketkeeper Josh Philippe as Victoria’s Fergus O’Neill slashed at a ball outside the off stump.
Smith appeared to momentarily go the wrong way before flinging out his left hand with the ball already past him, plucking it out of thin air to dismiss a stunned O’Neill for 24 runs.

The batsman couldn’t believe it, and neither could anyone else.
“What a grab, reflex action, that is sensational!” exclaimed the cricket.com.au commentary team.
“This game is unfair, he is on another level, Steve Smith. What can’t he do? Deadset.”
The remarkable dismissal was Nathan Lyon’s first wicket of the Victorian second innings, after the Test off-spinner took 4-82 on day one.
