MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell Kernels volleyball had its seven-match winning streak come to an end last night with a 3-0 loss at Aberdeen Central, (26-24, 25-12, 25-18). Charleigh Collins had eight kills for Mitchell, while Addie Siemsen had 21 assists and 11 digs. Cassidy Korzan had four aces. Mitchell falls to 13-5 on the season and will be at Tea Area on Friday at 6:30 pm on KORN.
— Mitchell Kernels football ends the season at home vs. No. 2 Yankton on Thursday night at 7 pm. The KORNer Booth pregame show starts at 6 pm on KORN News Radio.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan volleyball will be at Waldorf on Wednesday at 7:30 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan men’s soccer will be at Briar Cliff on Wednesday at 1 pm with three matches remaining in the regular season.
— Dakota Wesleyan women’s soccer will be at Briar Cliff on Wednesday at 2:30 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan football hosts Waldorf for homecoming on Saturday at 2 pm.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State volleyball swept North Dakota on Tuesday night 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-11). SDSU is now 8-0 in the Summit League and 14-3 overall on the season. The Jacks hit .302 for the match, while UND had 26 hitting errors and just 24 kills over the three sets. Sylvie Zgonc finished with a match-high 13 kills, while setter Rylee Martin had 36 assists. SDSU hosts Oral Roberts on Thursday at 7 pm.
— South Dakota State middle blocker Sydni Schetnan was named Summit League Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday. This is the third defensive honor of Schetnan’s career and her first of the season. Schetnan led the league with 1.8 blocks per set and 13 total blocks across two matches for the Jackrabbits.
— South Dakota State women’s soccer will be at Kansas City on Thursday at 7 pm.
— No. 2 South Dakota State hosts top-ranked North Dakota State in the annual Dakota Marker game on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 7 pm. on ESPNU. The Jackrabbit pregame show is at 5 pm on KORN News Radio.
SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD volleyball won at North Dakota State on Tuesday, 3-1 (22-25, 25-14, 25-20, 25-18). The Coyotes improved to 13-7 on the season and 5-3 in the Summit League. Lauren Medeck led USD with 20 kills, while setter Avery Van Hook had 43 assists. The Coyotes host Denver on Thursday at 7 pm.
— USD women’s soccer will be at Omaha on Thursday at 7 pm.
— USD football hosts Illinois State next Saturday at 1 pm.
NBA
— Reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander hit two free throws with 2.3 seconds remaining in the second overtime to give the Oklahoma City Thunder a 125-124 win. It was just the sixth time an opening night game went to double overtime and the first time since 2005. Gilgeous-Alexander, last season’s scoring champion, had just five points at halftime but finished with 35. Chet Holmgren added 28 points and seven rebounds for the Thunder. Alperen Sengun had 39 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists for the Rockets. He made a career-high five 3-pointers. Kevin Durant had 23 points and nine rebounds in his first game with Houston.
— Jimmy Butler scored 31 points and Steph Curry added 23 as the Golden State Warriors overcame Luka Doncic’s 43-point performance to beat the Los Angeles Lakers 119-109 in both teams’ season opener. LeBron James missed a season opener for the first time in his 23 years in the NBA due to injury that is expected to sideline him until mid-November. The Warriors largely shut down the Lakers apart from Doncic. who scored 40 points for the 47th time in his NBA career and the third since joining the Lakers. Doncic added 12 rebounds and nine assists. L.A. lost its season opener for the ninth time in 10 years.
MLB
— Blake Snell will start Game 1 of the World Series for the Los Angeles Dodgers against the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday, while Yoshi Yamamoto will pitch in Game 2, according to manager Dave Roberts. This pitching order repeats the strategy used in the NL Championship Series, which the Dodgers swept in four games against the Milwaukee Brewers. Snell had an impressive performance in Game 1 last week, striking out 10 over eight scoreless innings. Meanwhile, Yamamoto threw the first complete game by a Dodgers pitcher in the playoffs since 2004.
— The Los Angeles Angels have hired former major league catcher Kurt Suzuki as their next manager. Suzuki spent the past three seasons as a special assistant to the Angels general manager. Suzuki played 16 seasons in the major leagues for five teams, including the final two with the Angels. Los Angeles pivoted quickly to Suzuki after talks with former slugger Albert Pujols broke down in recent days.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— The Southeastern Conference has fined Texas A&M $50,000 for violating its policy on faking injuries during games. The league also reprimanded coach Mike Elko for allowing cornerback Tyreek Chappell to feign an injury during the Aggies’ 45-42 win at Arkansas on Saturday. It happened with less than 13 minutes remaining in the game, when the Razorbacks completed a pass deep in A&M territory with the Aggies leading 38-27. Chappell was not in on the tackle and gave no indication he was hurt until he went to the ground and pointed to his right leg, stopping play. Texas A&M was flagged and charged a timeout because he presented as injured after the ball was spotted.
— The Big 12 Conference fined Arizona State $50,000 and publicly reprimanded the school after its fans stormed the field following Saturday’s win over No. 14 Texas Tech. Arizona State’s fans poured out of the stands after the Sun Devils rallied to beat the Red Raiders 26-22.
— The Music City Bowl in Nashville has a new title sponsor with Liberty Mutual Insurance taking over for the game pitting teams from the SEC and Big Ten. Th bowl, which started in 1998, will be played Dec. 30 at Nissan Stadium.
NFL
— Many questions are unanswered about the death of former NFL running back Doug Martin. He died over the weekend in the custody of Oakland, California, police, who said Martin was involved in a “brief struggle” with officers who took him into custody early Saturday. Martin’s former agent issued a statement that said Martin felt overwhelmed and disoriented and fled his home before entering a neighbor’s home two doors down, where police confronted him. His former agent said the 36-year-old Martin privately battled mental health challenges that impacted his personal and professional life.
GOLF
— Golf legend Jack Nicklaus has won a $50 million verdict in a defamation lawsuit filed in Florida against his former business partners. A six-person jury found that the Nicklaus Companies had damaged the 18-time major champion’s reputation and exposed him to ridicule, hatred, mistrust, distrust or contempt. Nicklaus Companies owner and executive chairman Howard Milstein and executive Andrew O’Brien were also named individually as defendants, but jurors did not find them personally liable. According to the lawsuit, Nicklaus claimed that Milstein, O’Brien and others at the company spread false stories that Nicklaus considered a $750 million deal to join the Saudi Arabia-backed LIV Golf League and that he was suffering from dementia and no longer mentally fit to manage his affairs.
