Wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith led England’s counter-attack with a blazing hundred, packing a punch on India’s bowling attack, especially on Prasidh Krishna, in the morning session of the third day of the ongoing second Test at Edgbaston. The 24-year-old appeared to be Bazballing after the hosts lost a couple of early wickets right after the start of play. He reached triple figures with a boundary off Ravindra Jadeja at the stroke of lunch, shifting momentum in England’s favour.
This was his second Test hundred, which came at the perfect time to save England from what looked like a potential batting collapse. The hosts were struggling at 84/5 when Smith joined forces with Harry Brook to turn the table. With the help of 11 boundaries and a six, Smith notched his hundred off just 80 balls and became the English batter to score the fastest Test hundred against India.
Smith’s Cricketing Journey
Jamie Smith’s cricketing journey has been a steady rise through the ranks marked by talent. Hailing from Surrey, he first represented the county at the Under-9 level and quickly rose through every age group, often playing well above his years. At just 12, he turned out for the U-17 side alongside Tom Curran, five years his senior—a clear signal of his potential.
Smith made his Surrey debut just before turning 18, stepping in during a T20 at Lord’s due to an injury crisis. He soon showcased his big-match temperament in England U-19 colours in 2019, scoring 90 and 104 in a Test in Chattogram. He followed that with 127 in his first-class debut for MCC against an attack featuring Stuart Broad and Dom Bess.
In 2022, his unbeaten 234 against Gloucestershire put him firmly in the ECB’s spotlight. Although he struggled for consistency that season, his talent remained unquestioned. The 2022/23 winter cemented his reputation as he smashed a 71-ball century for the Lions in Galle—the fastest in Lions four-day history. Seen as a natural successor behind the stumps, Smith is tipped for a bright England future.
International Debut And Way Forward
At the age of 23, Smith his international debut for England against West Indies at Lord’s in July 2024 and impressed with a 70-run knock as the hosts won by an innings and 114 runs. Since then, he went on to represent England in 11 Tests, scoring 725 runs at an impressive average of 45.31. Before smashing a blazing hundred against India, Smith scored his maiden Test ton against Sri Lanka at Old Trafford, Manchester in August 2024.
