The 148th edition of Wimbledon, one of the oldest and most prestigious tennis tournaments, kicked off today (June 30) at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC) in west London. The tournament will continue till July 13. In the men’s singles draw, all eyes are on the recent French Open winner and two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz.
The 22-year-old Spaniard enters the tournament with a hot 18-match winning streak. Fresh from his majestic French Open triumph, where he defeated the World No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the lengthiest Roland Garros final ever that lasted for a total of five hours and 29 minutes. Alcaraz secured his second title at the Queen’s Club Championships, where he tied Rafael Nadal and Feliciano Lopez’s record for the most titles amongst Spanish men on the grass surface in the Open Era.
Finishing off what many would describe as an ‘ideal’ preparation for this edition of Wimbledon, the Spaniard is all set to face the third Grand Slam of the year. Carlos Alcaraz’s title defence after his French Open victory will be met with some intense competition as Novak Djokovic also makes his return to the tournament in a bid to match Federer’s Open Era record of eight Wimbledon titles.

The All England Club will use electronic line-calling during matches for the first time, replacing line judges. That puts Wimbledon in line with the Australian Open and U.S. Open, leaving the French Open as the last major with humans making in or out calls, at least as of now. Along with this, the timings for both singles finals have been pushed to 4 p.m. IST (11 a.m. ET).
