England have a mountain to climb in terms of first-innings runs as far as the second Test against India in Edgbaston is concerned. They were 77/3 at the end of Day 2 with Harry Brook (30*) and Joe Root (18*) at the crease. With such a daunting first innings score in front of them, England’s assistant coach Jeetan Patel was confident that the team could find a way to win.
“We have two of the greatest batters in the world at the crease now, hopefully they get back in tomorrow and nestle in and cash in on what could be a good day’s cricket,” Patel said at the end of Day 2 in Edgbaston on July 3 (Thursday).
“We will find another way of trying to get over the line. That’s the beauty of the team we have, the players we have and the belief they have,” he added.
The New Zealander, who is part of an almost all-New Zealand coaching staff with Brendon McCullum and Tim Southee donning the hats of head coach and bowling consultant, said that a lot of cricket is left to be played and hence people should not write off England.
“There are three days of cricket left, lots of cricket to go and on a fast-scoring ground you never know what can happen. I’ve said this many times in front of all of you, and you keep laughing at me! It’s about getting some rest in some guys, some shut-eye, and coming back fresh tomorrow,” Patel said.
