South Africa beat Bangladesh in a thriller on Monday (October 13) in the Women’s World Cup. Here’s what the points table looks like after that result.
South Africa managed to avoid what would have been the shock of the 2025 Women’s World Cup so far, triumphing by three wickets with three balls remaining at Visakhapatnam to stay on course for semi-final qualification.
Batting first, Bangladesh accelerated after a steadfast start to set the Proteas 233 to win. All of the top four made it to 25, though none scored at a strike rate of 80 or above, and when captain Nigar Sultana Joty fell for 32 to the first ball of the final 10 overs, Bangladesh were 150-3, and in danger of subsiding for under 200. Instead they plundered 82 runs in the death overs, 18-year-old Shorna Akter cracking an unbeaten 51 off 35, and Ritu Moni chipping in with 19 off 8 at the end.
The Tigers’ momentum carried into the chase, with in-form opener Tazmin Brits falling for a golden duck. Laura Wolvaardt looked to bide her time, but was run out for 31, and Anneke Bosch was dismissed by Moni in the following over. When Annerie Dercksen, playing her first game of the World Cup in place of the injured Sune Luus, was bowled by Rabeya Khan for 2, South Africa were 64-4, and that became 78-5 when Sinalo Jafta was bowled by Fahima Khatun for 4.
But, aided by several dropped catches, South Africa fought back. Marizanne Kapp and Chloe Tryon both made half-centuries before Nadine de Klerk, South Africa’s hero for the second game in succession, applied the finishing touches in partnership with Masabata Klaas.
