Yankees Receive Exciting News Before Angels Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The New York Yankees’ pitching staff did its job against the Los Angeles Angels on Monday, but it wasn’t enough. They lost 1-0 in 11 innings, wasting starting pitcher Clarke Schmidt’s 7.2-inning shutout.
Angels right-hander Jose Soriano tossed seven scoreless frames of his own, and their bullpen took care of the rest. First baseman Noah Schanuel’s RBI double in the 11th inning was enough to get them the victory.
The Yankees have now lost four straight games and have been shut out in their last two. However, manager Aaron Boone revealed encouraging news about a key relief pitcher before Tuesday’s game, via SNY.
He said that right-hander Luke Weaver (hamstring) looked “great” in a simulated game on Tuesday.
“These last two weeks I feel like have gone really well for him,” he added. “From being able to kind of maintain his throwing program, he’s already got three sides in, and the live [batting practice] today where we got him two-ups, kind of simulating four outs…He really looks good.”
Weaver (1-1, 1.05 ERA) hasn’t made a big-league appearance since May 31. The 31-year-old has converted eight out of nine save opportunities and also has six holds. He’s second on the team only to fellow right-hander Devin Williams in saves, who has nine out of 10 opportunities.
Weaver broke out for New York last season, going 7-3 with a 2.89 ERA and 22 holds over 62 appearances. The 6-foot-2-inch, 180-pounder also converted all four of his save opportunities.
Right-hander Will Warren (4-3, 4.86 ERA) will start for the Yankees against Angels right-hander Kyle Hendricks (4-6, 5.20 ERA) on Tuesday.
